MONADNOCK DESIGNS INSTALLATION FOR FESTIVAL A/D WERF UTRECHT

Festival aan de Werf in Utrecht has invited MONADNOCK for a second time to design an installation on the Neude square in Utrecht. Aiming for a variation of atmospheres, the huge white wall divides the square into three different rooms. The top of the wall is accessible by a boardwalk, providing new perspectives and overviews onto the square. The temporary scaffolded structure covered with recyclable plastic sheeting contains all functions required like bars, kitchen, storage and ticketing, in order to maintain a clear and open space inbetween.

PUBLICATION OASE83 'COMMISSIONING ARCHITECTURE'

Architectuur komt tot stand vanuit een combinatie van partijen, waarin architecten reageren op hun opdrachtgevers. Ondanks de aandacht voor bekende voorbeelden, zoals Truus Schröder, wordt architectuur echter vaak beschouwd en verklaard vanuit de overwegingen van de architect die in het object zijn vervat en de ideeën die binnen de ontwerpende discipline worden ontwikkeld. Dit nummer van OASE gaat over de invloed van de opdrachtgever op de wijze waarop gebouwen of stedelijke ensembles hun vorm krijgen. Dit is een historiografische revisie: opdrachtgevers blijken zelf ook vaak creatieve impulsen te hebben, en hun maatschappelijke opvattingen zijn van invloed geweest op de ontwikkeling van architectonische culturen. Daarnaast komen ook opdrachtgevers aan het woord die hun werk uitdrukkelijk beschouwen als een bijdrage aan de cultuur van het bouwen en een duurzame ontwikkeling van stedelijke samenlevingen.
In een tijd waarin zowel opdrachtgevers als architecten zich moeten bezinnen op hun rol en verantwoordelijkheid is een herlezing van de architectuurgeschiedenis uit het perspectief van de opdracht meer dan noodzakelijk.

PUBLICATION 'DRAWINGBOOK ON URBAN BUILDINGS'

Op uitnodiging van AIR heeft Monadnock in samenwerking met TU Delft, vakgroep Public Building een analyseformat ontwikkeld en een reeks analyses van grote hybride stadsgebouwen getekend. De geselecteerde reeks brengt een aantal historische Rotterdamse gebouwen en hun inspiraties van eerder of elders op de wereld in beeld. De architectonische tekening vormt de basis voor dit boek. De stapeling van functies wordt in doorsnedes, axometrien en plattegronden getoond, hiermee worden de publieke binnenwerelden van deze gebouwen in kaart gebracht.

By invitation of the Architectural Institute Rotterdam (AIR), Monadnock in collaboration with the Technical University of Delft (TUD), department Public Buildings, developed a format of analysis and drew a series of huge hybrid urban buildings. The selected series show typical historical examples in Rotterdam as compared with examples from other parts of the world. The architectural drawing forms the basis of this publication. The layering of functions and systems of circulation is visualised in sections, axonometries and plans, therefore offering insight in the public inner- worlds of these buildings.

MONADNOCK WINS COMPETITION FOR A LANDMARK IN NIEUW BERGEN

In het kader van de dorpskernvernieuwing in Nieuw-Bergen (L) heeft Concept-nl zes architecten en industriële vormgevers uitgenodigd voor het ontwerp van een nieuw landmark. Hiermee wordt de identiteit van het dorp benadrukt - de toren zal openbaar toegankelijk zijn waardoor bewoners en bezoekers uitzicht wordt verschaft op de aangrenzende natuurgebieden. Het schetsontwerp van Monadnock is als winnaar uitgekozen vanwege de nauwkeurige afstemming van een gebouw waarin hoog en laag verenigt wordt in èèn volume; de onderbouw sluit aan op de kleinschalige intimiteit van het marktplein terwijl de hoge toren van veraf zichtbaar zal zijn.

The renewal of the central core of the municipality of Bergen formed the motive for Concept-nl to invite six architects and designers to propose a new landmark. With this the identity of the village will be emphasized - the tower will be publicly accessible it will offer inhabitants and visitors an impressive view over the surrounding nature reserves. The sketch-design of Monadnock won the competition proposing an accurate tuning of a building that combines high and low in one volume: the lower part connects to the small scaled intimacy of the market square, while the high tower will be visible from great distance.
